Nigerian hangs self

A Nigerian national committed suicide by hanging himself inside an apartment unit Tuesday night in Sampaloc, Manila, police said yesterday.

The victim, identified as Callistus Nzewigbo, between 30 and 35 years old, was hanging from a wooden beam in his underwear when discovered by friends inside the bathroom of Suite 3 of an apartment building at 165 M. De la Fuente street, Sampaloc. Nzewigbo used a blanket to hang himself.

SPO2 Virgo Villareal said that except for the ligature mark on his neck, no other external injuries were found.

The victim’s friends found the door of his unit locked when they paid him a visit at about 11 p.m. After successive knocks with no response, the friends sought the assistance of the building’s security guard who entered the unit through a window.

The friends then found the victim inside the bathroom. Several empty bottles of a local whisky was found in his room.

Villareal said the foreigner was taking up a masteral course at the Manuel L. Quezon University. The Nigerian Embassy was notified of the death.
