NBI working for surrender of condo rape-slay suspect

The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) is now conducting manhunt against rape-slay suspect Bebs Reyes, but NBI Director Reynaldo Wycoco said it would be better for the young man to surrender and face the charges.

Reyes has been in hiding after a warrant of arrest was issued by Manila Judge Reynaldo Alhambra last July 27 for the rape with homicide in the case involving the slaying of bank teller Candice Castro inside her condominium unit in Malate, Manila last May.

"We know Bebs Reyes is one of the most wanted person in Manila. It would be better for him and for his family to effect the presentation to us," Wycoco said.

Reyes’ lawyer Rico Bolongaita failed to block the arrest of his client after the judge denied his motion to determine probable cause for the issuance of warrant.

Through his lawyer, Reyes maintained that he was innocent and there was not a single evidence to link him to the crime except the testimony of co-accused Philippe Marcelo, who is currently locked up in jail.

It can be recalled that Reyes voluntarily gave himself up to the NBI after he was implicated to the killing.

Reyes stayed at the NBI for more than two weeks, but the bureau had to release him after the Castro family lawyer assailed the bureau for allegedly coddling the suspect.

"It is in his best interest for him to be brought back to authorities," Wycoco pointed out.

The NBI chief said there was no indication that Reyes has left the country to evade prosecution.
