Actor nabbed at NAIA-2 for drug violation

- Sandy Araneta -
Movie and television star William Martinez was arrested yesterday morning for possession of drug paraphernalia by police at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Centennial Terminal as he was about to leave on board a of Philippine Airlines (PAL) domestic flight to Dipolog City.

A former matinee idol, Martinez, 42, was held when police found a tooter that had residue believed to be shabu.

Kibitzers said Martinez, a resident of Antipolo City, was almost in tears when arrested by SPO3 Leonardo Calibuso, duty team leader of the 2nd Police Center for Aviation Security of the Philippine National Police-Aviation Security Group at the initial check area of the southwing of the NAIA Centennial Terminal.

The actor, wearing a white shirt and white shorts, was bound for the Dakak Beach Resort in Mindanao, with his wife Yayo Aguila and comediennes Giselle Sanchez and Wilma Doesn’t to shoot a movie.

Martinez refused to be interviewed by the press and made no statement regarding the incident, police said. The actor also did not resist arrest, but repeatedly shook his head.

He was turned over to the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA), through Police Chief Inspector Roseller Fabian, supervisor of NAIA-PDEA, for investigation and filing of charges.

Martinez will be charged for possession of drug paraphernalia, an offense now considered a crime, said Police Inspector Michael Rodriguez Coo, of the ASG.

Coo said Martinez cannot post bail until Monday, but charges will be filed right away before the Pasay City Prosecutor’s Office during the weekend.

Martinez’s wife decided to stay in Manila, while their traveling companions left for Dakak.

They were about to board domestic flight PR-167 bound for Dipolog, which was scheduled to leave at 10:31 a.m., when Martinez was held at around 8:30 a.m. at the initial check area, police said.

Coo said Martinez was arrested after police found in his possession a tooter, which is used to inhale shabu.

"The evidence obtained was discovered concealed inside the left back pocket of the suspect’s white short pants during the mandatory body frisking conducted by non-uniformed personnel Noel Lucas at said area," a report made by the ASG stated.

The ASG also turned over to the PDEA as evidence the drug paraphernalia and Martinez’s round-trip PAL ticket, Manila-Dipolog-Manila.

Tests will be made on the tooter to confirm whether or not the residue is shabu, Coo said.
