Metro

PWD-friendly mayors cited

-
Seven Metro Manila mayors have been recognized as active supporters and implementers of Batas Pambansa Blg. 344, also known as the Accessibility Law for persons with disabilities (PWDs).

The seven local chief executives are Mayors Feliciano Belmonte Jr., Quezon City; Lito Atienza, Manila; Jejomar Binay, Makati; Vergel Aguilar, Las Piñas; Benhur Abalos Jr., Mandaluyong; Ma. Lourdes Fernando, Marikina; and Soledad Eusebio, Pasig. They were recognized for their continuous support to make establishments within their respective localities accessible to PWDs.

The Accessibility Law enhances the mobility of PWDs in public places by providing features like grab bars, hand rails, elevators, wide entrances and ramps that can be used by them.

Former Defense Secretary and Senator Orlando Mercado, together with Department of Public Works and Highways Undersecretary Manuel Bonuan and Social Welfare and Development Undersecretary Luwalhati Pablo, handed over the plaques of recognition in an awarding ceremony held at the DSWD Compound, Batasan Pambansa Complex, Constitution Hills, Diliman, Quezon City.
