A suspected member of the Sputnik Gang was killed in a shootout with policemen following a bus robbery the other night in Quezon City.
Police identified the fatality as Bernardino Estabaya, of San Roque, Barangay Pag-asa.
He was pronounced dead on arrival by doctors at the East Avenue Medical Center. He died from multiple gunshot wounds in the different parts of the body.
PO2 Joseph Dino, officer-on-case, said the incident happened at around 7 p.m. last Monday at a squatters area in front of Phil-Am Subdivision in Barangay Pag-asa.
Estabaya and two cohorts had just robbed passengers of a bus and alighted in front of the subdivision.
Victimized commuters immediately sought assistance from lawmen nearby, prompting Inspector Geronimo Estacio, PO1 Allan Poe Aragon, and a certain Ricardo Gonzales to proceed to the scene.
Upon reaching the area, one of the passengers pointed to the group who were walking away from the scene.
When the responding policemen approached the suspects they immediately scampered, prompting the lawmen to give chase. Upon reaching the squatters area, the suspects open fired at the cops.
In the exchange of gunfire Estabaya was hit. His two cohorts managed to escape.
Policemen recovered from the scene a homemade revolver with two live bullets and three empty shells. Katherine Adraneda
