The Quezon City government on its 64th foundation anniversary has surpassed the P5 -billion tax collection level which catapulted the city into the rank as the richest local government unit in the country last year.
In a report to Mayor Feliciano Belmonte Jr., City treasurer Dr. Victor Endriga said as of last Monday, the collection of the city government has reached P5,317,125,158.25. The P5.3-billion collection level was the basis for the declaration by the Commission on Audit (COA) of Quezon City as the richest city in the country.
Financial managers of the city expressed optimism that with the rate of collection, the city government could hit the P8-billion target for this year.
Earlier, Belmonte promoted on the spot revenue examiner Edgar Villanueva for remitting P29 million in collections to the city treasury in one day. Villanueva has collected a total of 42 million in the last five months. He is a member of the citys special task force which conducts review on the tax records of big time delinquent taxpayers.
The efficient tax collection of the city has made the city a model for the Department of the Interior and Local government for effective governance.
Serafin Benaldo, DILG regional director for the National Capital Region (NRC) said Quezon City now has the distinction of being the model city for good governance.
Benaldo, who accompanied Swedish Embassy officials earlier this week, said among the point of interest by foreign officials in Quezon City was its efficient garbage collection system.
The city is the first local government to have its own controlled dump facilities in Payatas. It also has a modern Maternal Recovery Facility in Barangay Holy Spirit where garbage is segregated, recycled and transformed into organic fertilizer.
"Quezon City is our model as far as good governance is concerned," Benaldo told The STAR.
He said foreign governments have expressed interest in providing the necessary assistance to the city to make it more effective in delivering basic services to the people. Perseus Echeminada
