MMDA scores law enforcers for coddling illegal vendors, barkers

Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) Chairman Bayani Fernando scored law enforcers yesterday for allegedly coddling illegal vendors and barkers in illegal terminals.

"The MMDA has done a lot already in terms of cleaning up Metro Manila of illegal vendors and arresting barkers but our efforts are hampered by the fact that some of them are receiving protection from cops," Fernando said.

Fernando revealed that a policeman with a rank of Senior Police Officer was identified as the alleged protector of the barkers arrested in an illegal terminal located at the corner of EDSA and Aurora Boulevard recently.

Two more anti-vendor enforcers were arrested by policemen in Cubao last week after arresting a stall owner who had overstepped the area allowed for vending.

Fernando told The STAR MMDA anti-vendor and traffic enforcers are not abusive and do not receive bribes from illegal vendors, jeepney or bus drivers, and barkers.

"The police would jail our enforcers just to mask their own illegal activities. They also want to prove to those bribing them that they can have our enforcers jailed," he said, adding he was certain that the policemen assigned to the MMDA do not receive bribes.

Fernando said the alleged policemen-cum-protectors are often the ones assigned to the police community precincts.

He reminded the police that it is their job to remove illegal vendors and barkers and that the MMDA is only assisting them in this responsibility.

He emphasized that police should not allow barkers under the MRT Taft Station in Pasay City.

The MMDA chairman said he has already informed Metro Manila police chief Deputy Director General Reynaldo Velasco about this.
