Northern Metro’s most wanted falls

- Pete Laude -
After almost two years in hiding, a 34-year-old garments factory supervisor, listed as the number one most wanted criminal by the Northern Criminal Investigation and Detection Group, was finally arrested Friday in Quezon City.

Superintendent Simon Fernan, Northern CIDG chief, identified the suspect as Alberto Canega, alias Alfredo Asuris, of Paradise Village, Letre Road, Barangay Tonsuya, Malabon City.

The suspect, a native of Leyte, is also wanted by the Leyte police for a robbery case. He was arrested at around 11:30 p.m. while in a drinking session in a videoke bar in Baler, Quezon City.

Police Officer 3 Dante Bonita said that Canega, who is also involved at a string of criminal activities in Northern Metro Manila, evaded arrest for a long time by changing his name to Alfredo Asuris. He was even able to get employed at a garments factory in Barangay Malinta, Valenzuela City.

The CIDG, in cooperation with the Region 8 Navy Intelligence Security Unit (NISU-8), however, traced Canega’s whereabouts through an informant.

Bonita said that Canega is the prime suspect in the killing of one Jorge Castin, a member of the Civilian Volunteers Against Crime (CVAC) on Aug. 10, 2001 in Barangay Tonsuya.

CVAC, a non-government organization (NGO), is a force multiplier of the CIDG in its fight against criminality.

The Navotas police also arrested Friday Jonathan Burgos, 29, of 463 North Bay Boulevard North.

Burgos is wanted for murder and is listed as the number eight most wanted man by the town’s police.

Another murder suspect, Antonio Ocampo, 27, also of North Bay Boulevard North, Navotas’ number 10 in the police most wanted list, was likewise apprehended.
