Makati to install traffic cameras

The city government of Makati is planning to install surveillance cameras at selected intersections primarily to monitor traffic in the city.

City Mayor Jejomar Binay said the cameras will be used to monitor the traffic situation along the major intersections so that the city’s traffic management office could come up with quick response measures to the problem areas.

Traffic in Makati City has been a perennial problem particularly during rush hours as bulk of motorists enter the city daily to go to work.

Binay said the data gathered from the monitoring will be used to come up with measures to improve the traffic situation in the city.

In some special circumstances when there are VIPs that need to pass through the city’s roads, the monitoring done through the cameras could be used to inform the traffic enforcers to make way for them.

Binay said the cameras could also be used during some criminal incidents wherein the perpetrators are on board get-away vehicles.

He said the cameras could be used to pinpoint the movement of the suspect’s vehicles so that the law enforcers could set-up blockades to trap them.

Meanwhile, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) announced yesterday that it has hired 200 new traffic enforcers.

MMDA Executive Director for Traffic Angelito Vergel de Dios said that some of the traffic enforcers are already performing on the job training in preparation for the opening of classes.

De Dios said that the new recruits will all be ready for deployment during the opening of classes when the volume of traffic is expected to increase significantly.
