Road repair underway in Manila

-
Work crews of the City Engineer’s Office of Manila have taken advantage of the relatively good weather to hasten the repair of roads in the city damaged by floods caused by heavy rains.

This was the report made by City Engineer Armand Andres to Manila Mayor Lito Atienza as he updated the latter on the progress of road repairs.

"We again deployed road repair crews as soon as there was a break in the weather last Monday and the work is still ongoing until today. We hope that the prevailing good weather would hold so we can complete the necessary repair of roads damaged by the incessant rains in the past weeks," Atienza said after receiving a briefing from Andres.

Andres reported that work crews covered potholes with hot-mix asphalt starting Monday morning when the weather cleared. Even before that, however, he said that the work crews already undertook repair of damaged roads using cold-mix asphalt, which can be used even under wet conditions.

Among the roads that have been repaired are the following: District 1 – Capulong, Rio and Tayuman streets; District 2 – Tayabas street, Dagupan Extension, Jose Abad Santos Avenue, Raxabago, Juan Luna, T. Mapua and Antipolo streets; District 3 – Dimasalang, Blumentritt, Laon-Laan and Ma. Clara streets; District 4 – Dimasalang and G. Tuazon streets., and A.H. Lacson Avenue (formerly Gov. Forbes); District 5 – United Nations Avenue, Romualdez, Zobel Roxas, San Andres, Pedro Gil, Canonigo and Tanque streets, President Quirino Avenue and Osmeña Highway; and, District 6 – Labores, Lamayan, Jesus, Laura, Posadas, Otis, Zamora, Pedro Gil, Jesus and Tejeron streets.

Meanwhile, Engineer Rafael Borromeo, head of the Manila Department of Public Services, reported to Atienza they have deployed teams even at the height of tropical storm Chedeng to clear the city’s streets and sidewalks of garbage and debris scattered by floodwaters.

The clearing of drainage mains and canals, which was undertaken by the City Engineer’s Office and the Department of Public Services all throughout the summer months, was resumed last Monday as soon as the weather cleared to make sure water would flow unimpeded along the said waterways.
