SC rejects Llamas request

The Supreme Court has denied the request of slain Ateneo law graduate Jose Llamas’ mother to include him in the roll of attorneys posthumously.

Instead, the SC directed the Office of the Bar Confidant to issue a special certificate that Llamas passed the 2002 Bar.

The High Tribunal said Llamas could not be formally recognized as a lawyer since he was not able to take his oath.

Taking the oath and signing the roll of attorneys are personal acts that could not be delegated to a successful examinee’s heirs.

Bar confidant Cristina Layusa said the oathtaking and signing are not only ceremonial but indispensable as part of the SC’s rules and traditions.

In a resolution dated March 18, the SC said records showed Llamas possessed all the qualifications of becoming a member of the Bar, but the petition of his mother, Ma. Lourdes Llamas, could only be noted by the Bar confidant.

The 26-year-old Llamas was gunned down by Basher Abdulrahman last Jan. 10 over a minor traffic mishap at the corner of Buendia and Taft Avenues in Pasay City.
