December 1, 2002 | 12:00am
Thousands of "Santa and little drummer boy" lanterns have been set up along the stretch of Zapote-Alabang Road light posts to brighten the entire city of Las Piñas City, signalling the celebration of the Christmas season.
Dubbed as the "City of Lights," Las Piñas City will also display a 25-foot tall Christmas tree at the city hall grounds.
Las Piñas City Mayor Vergel "Nene" Aguilar together with his wife Imelda Aguilar, Vice Mayor Louie Bustamante and the city councilors will spearhead the lighting of the 25-foot tall Christmas tree on Tuesday at 7 p.m. A 20-minute fireworks display will follow the lighting of the tree.
Aguilar is optimistic that Las Piñas City, the lantern capital of Metro Manila, will boost its tourism industry with the continuous ingenuity and craftsmanship enjoyed by the Las Piñeros.
Despite the flourishing of various parol centers in other parts of the country, Las Piñas has thrived through the years and maintained its lantern-making industry.
Mrs. Aguilar, honorary chair of the Las Piñas Tourism Council also said that Dec. 3 will be the launching as Metro Manilas lantern capital and its tourism showcase. She vowed to promote the city as tourism destination every holiday season.
Private subdivisions and 20 barangays have shown their unique creativity by decorating their respective areas in their effort to truly make Las Piñas the "City of Lights."
Aguilar lauded the cooperation of the residents and local government officials in their desire to make the city peaceful and beautiful during the holidays.
