Northern Police District (NPD) operatives arrested two notorious holdup men operating in the northern part of Metro Manila who were both wanted for murder during a series of operations in the cities of Malabon and Caloocan.
Senior Superintendent Marcelino Franco Jr., NPD director, identified the suspects as Edwin Rodriguez, 28, of Block 14-A, Lot 23, Phase 2-A, Kaunlaran Village, Malabon City, and Rene delos Reyes, 27, of Phase 8-B, Package 4, Block 8, Lot 14, Bagong Silang, Caloocan City. Rodriguez was arrested in Malabon City by the District Police Intelligence Unit agents, led by Chief Inspector Sotero Ramos Jr.
According to Ramos, Rodriguez, released from prison only last Sept. 5, is the prime suspect in the robbery and killing of tricycle driver Jose Macatangay on Nov. 5 in Malabon City.
Macatangay was plying his tricycle along Labahita street in Dagat-Dagatan, Malabon when he was reportedly held up by Rodriguez and his cohort identified as Michael Lagman at about 4 p.m. last Monday. Macatangay fought it out with the suspects but was ganged up and stabbed to death by the robbers, Ramos said.
Rodriguez, Ramos added is also wanted by the police for the murder of one Richard Bernardo, 24, on Oct. 17 in Barangay Mozon also in Malabon City.
Double murder charges were filed against Rodriguez who is now locked up in jail with Lagman.
In a related development, Delos Reyes, with a standing warrant of arrest for murder, and one Eduardo Castro, 24, also of Bagong Silang, and two others identified as Larry San Felipe Perito and one alias Leng Leng, were the prime suspects in the robbery and killing of 38-year-old businessman Florencio Candido last September in Bagong Silang, Caloocan City.
Superintendent Dionicio Borromeo, Caloocan City police Station Intelligence and Investigation Division chief, said that at about 5:30 a.m. on Sept. 5, Delos Reyes and his group reportedly robbed Candido of some P300,000 in cash including the victims licensed .9mm pistol.
Candido was ganged up and stabbed to death by the suspects after the victim tried to put up a fight, Borromeo said. Pete Laude
