Bilibid escape tunnel discovered

A short tunnel has been discovered at the maximum security compound of the New Bilibid Prisons (NBP) in Muntinlupa City, apparently meant to be an escape route for inmates.
NBP Director Ricardo Macala said yesterday the tunnel, measuring two feet by two feet, was found between the Iglesia ni Kristo and Seventh Day Adventists chapels.
The chapels are located near Building 1, Dorm C where there are 317 inmates, 99 of whom have death sentences affirmed by the Supreme Court, Macala said.
The existence of the tunnel was tipped off to authorities by an inmate who also acts as an informant, he added.
Macala said they suspect other inmates at the compound could have dug the tunnel and not the death row convicts.
Except for those on Death Row, all other inmates are free to roam around the compound.
Macala said that in 1980, 20 inmates escaped through another tunnel. Nikko Dizon
