Makati barangays ready for Coastal Clean-Up Day

The various barangays of Makati City are set for today’s city-wide volunteer clean-up drive on creeks, canals and other waterways in line with the Department of Tourism and the International Marinelife Alliance’s observance of the global celebration called "International Coastal Clean-Up."

The annual activity will be held simultaneously in over 100 countries, including the US.

Makati Mayor Jejomar Binay urged residents of 17 barangyas where major creeks and canals are located to participate in this effort, in order to raise their awareness on the importance of keeping waterways in their areas clean for a healthier environment.

Binay stressed that with the onset of the rainy season, there is an urgent need to clear the city’s waterways to minimize, if not totally prevent, bothersome floods that cause traffic jams and breed diseases that pose serious threats to the health of Makati residents.

Among target areas of the clean-up drive are creeks behind P. Medina St., Barangay Pio del Pilar, Tripa de Galina creeks at Bgy. Bangkal, San Jose creek at Bgy. Guadalupe Nuevo, Makati Diversion Channel at Bgy. Bel-Air, and Amorsolo creek at Bgy. San Lorenzo.
