Bizarre flyover mishap
September 1, 2002 | 12:00am
An unidentified man trying to cross the Kalayaan flyover in Makati City was killed after being hit by a speeding car the other night.
PO2 Reynaldo Juan of the Makati Police Homicide Division said the incident took place at around 7:05 p.m. along Gil Puyat Avenue at the base of the flyover in Barangay Pitogo.
Juan said the victim, who was apparently drunk, was trying to cross Gil Puyat Avenue by using the flyover. As he ran and jumped over the steel railing, the momentum caused him to land directly on the major thoroughfare.
Businessman Jason Mendoza, 30, a resident of Cainta, Rizal, was on board his white Toyota Corolla sedan along Gil Puyat when the victim landed directly in front of his vehicle.
Caught by surprise and unable to turn the wheel in time, Mendoza rammed into the victim, who was thrown directly into the cars windshield.
Despite the initial shock and a broken windshield, the driver carried the victim into his vehicle and rushed him to the St. Claire Hospital in Makati City, where the attending physicians pronounced him dead on arrival.
Mendoza was momentarily detained at the precinct of the Makati Police but was eventually turned over to his lawyer. Marvin Sy
