A 22-year-old Chinese national was shot dead the other day by at least three unidentified armed men after he tried to help his mother who was being robbed in their hardware store in Quezon City.
Jovencio Wong, of 14 Don Renato St., Don Enrique Heights, sustained a bullet wound in the body and expired while undergoing medical treatment at the Philippine Heart Center. The victims mother, Nancy, 48, said to be the manager of the family-owned WKC Hardware Co., was robbed of their daily earnings and other valuables worth over P200,000.
The gunmen, all armed with handguns of unknown caliber, escaped right after the heist. They fled on board a red Nissan Sentra with no plates.
Police said the younger Wong was shot after he spotted his mother being mugged and threatened by the robbers. She was about to close the shop when the incident occurred.
Initial reports showed that Nancy was carrying her handbag and was outside to lock up the hardware store located at Commonwealth Ave., Barangay Holy Spirit when the armed mens car suddenly stopped in front of the shop.
Three men alighted and pointed their firearms at the elder Wong. One of the killers then grabbed her handbag containing at least P200,000 in cash, while the two divested her of personal belongings. At that point, Jovencio spotted what was going on and tried to lunge towards the assailants. One of the robbers shot him once in the left side of the chest.
The gunmen immediately sped-off towards the direction of Fairview as Wong was rushed to the hospital where he expired at about 7:50 p.m. Operatives of the Central Police District are now conducting follow-up operations. Matthew Estabillo
