American stockbroker attacked with cleaver

An American stockbroker and analyst was hacked in the head with a cleaver by an allegedly drug-crazed man in Makati City yesterday.

John Mangun, 51, a stockbroker of I.B. Jimenez Securities, narrowly cheated death and is now undergoing treatment at a hospital.

PO2 Juancho Ibis of the Makati Police Homicide Division reported that the incident took place at 12:45 p.m. the other day in the apartment of Mangun in Mascardo St., Barangay Sta. Cruz, Makati City.

It was revealed that the suspect, who was identified as 35-year-old Erwin Sison, was apparently high on drugs and was standing in the corridor of the apartment compound causing trouble.

Mangun had just stepped out of his apartment and was on his way to his car when Sison spotted him and called his attention.

According to Ibis, Sison asked Mangun what his problem was and the broker tried to ignore him.

Sison, who is said to be a relative of Mangun’s landlord, continued to goad the American at which point the two men had an exchange of words.

During the heat of the exchange, the suspect went into his own apartment and came out seconds later with a cleaver. He immediately attacked Mangun and hacked him in the head.

According to the suspect, Mangun was shouting profanities at him and that he took out the cleaver only to scare him. However, he claimed that the refusal of Mangun to stop his verbal assault caused him to lose his cool and attack the American. – Marvin Sy
