5 students hurt in road mishap

At least five young students are now in critical condition after the tricycle they were riding collided with a pick-up truck in Barangay South Triangle, Quezon City Monday.

Victims Isabel Tamsing, 13, Darren Alcala, 12, his younger brother Alvin, 9, Marvin Dayao, 14, and Princess Brano, 10, sustained serious injuries and are now confined at the Capitol Medical Center. All are students of the Quezon City High School and residents of Mother Ignacia Street.

Investigators said that the victims were on board a tricycle being driven by Rogelio Santiago at about 8 a.m. The five were on their way to school and were cruising along Scout Fuentebella street.

As they neared the exit of Barangay South Triangle, a Mazda pick-up truck (URE-841), whose driver was identified as Christopher Marana, moved in front of them.

The tricycle crashed into the pick-up when Maranan allegedly came to a sudden stop in the middle of the road – giving no time for Santiago to step on the brakes.

Police said the impact was so strong and sent the victims flying out of the tricycle and into the pavement. The victims suffered deep gashes and lacerations.

Maranan is now facing charges of reckless imprudence resulting to multiple physical injuries. – Matthew Estabillo
