Remove billboards that block roads — Fernando

Metropolitan Manila Development Authority Chairman Bayani Fernando has ordered the removal of all street billboards and signages which obstruct the flow of traffic.

Fernando observed that there are too many of these billboards in Metro Manila, most of which only go beyond the limits of their objectives.

"These signs and billboards should not make the roadways unsafe for the motorists and pedestrians," Fernando said.

The removal of the signs started early this week during Fernando’s routine inspection of roads in Metro Manila.

According to Fernando, the scope of the clearing activities is diverse, covering all types of advertisements in all areas of the metropolis.

Signs that are situated in a manner that would obstruct the movement of vehicles and pedestrians would be removed along with those that distract motorists, the MMDA chairman explained.

In addition, the advertisements placed in area that compete with the traffic signs would also be removed, Fernando added.

Fernando is also reviewing the advertisements placed on the structure of the Metrostar Express (MRT-3) along EDSA which has been a source of conflict between the MMDA and the proponent since the time of the MMDA Chairman Benjamin Abalos, Sr.

Abalos previously ordered the removal of all the ads posted on the base of the MRT-3 situated along the center islands of EDSA from Taft avenue in Pasay City to North avenue in Quezon City.

The MMDA’s action drew a legal battle which resulted in a temporary victory for the MRT-3’s proponent after a local court called for both parties to maintain a status quo until the legal issues are resolved. – Marvin Sy
