Daza says power rate hike unfair

As consumers and workers groups are mounting protests over the projected P3.97 per kilowatt-hour increase in electric power charges, Quezon City Fourth District Rep. Nanette Castelo Daza is lending her support to the fight.

In her statement, Daza said she feared the power rate hike would only make life more difficult for the common people, "with the prices of basic good and commodities to be aversely influenced by the increase."

"It is easy to see that the rate hike will have a commensurate effect on practically everything," said the lady solon.

Daza called on Malacañang to make the Manila Electric Company (Meralco) "sufficiently justify the proposed power rate hike before acting on the power distributor’s appeal."

The proposed rate hike had earlier drawn flak from the Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (Bayan), the Integrated Labor Organization of the Philippines (ILOP) and Pinag-isang Samahan ng mga Tsuper at Operators Nationwide (PISTON).

Militant groups including Kilusang Mayo Uno (KMU), Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (Bayan), women’s group Gabriela, urban poor group Kadamay, fisher folk group Pamalakaya and other groups held a noise barrage in Cubao, Quezon City to protest the increase in prices of oil, electricity and water.
