P3-M worth of smuggled sugar seized

Alert members of the Bureau of Customs siezed yesterday at the Manila International Container Port some P3 million worth of smuggled sugar from Taiwan that was misdeclared as 1,360 bags of dextrose monohydrate.

According to Customs examiners Ana Marie Maglasang and David Fernandez, the shipment, contained in a container van, was consigned to Palvis Merchandising Inc. based in Quezon City.

The Customs examiners said they inspected the shipment after it raised suspicion. Later, instead of dextrose from Changhwa Hsien, Taiwan, the container van yielded sugar.

According to the Bureau of Customs, the shipment was illegal as the consignee did not secure a permit to import from the Sugar Regulatory Administration. — Mike Frialde
