Daza explains proposal for another QC district

A Quezon City congresswoman defended her proposal to create a fifth congressional district in her city out of the Fairview-Novaliches area which is part of the Second District.

In a privilege speech, Nanette Castelo Daza, who represents the Fourth District, said she sought the division of the Second District because she believes that Quezon City can best be served by five district representatives.

She said she filed Bill 4185 in answer to various petitions sent to her by residents of District 2, which is representated in the House by Rep. Ismael "Chuck" Mathay III. She assured Mathay that personal motives were not involved in her proposal.

She said even Mathay’s father, former Mayor Mel Mathay Jr., favored the division of the Second District into two districts during the debate on a bill creating Novaliches City, which the affected residents rejected in a plebiscite.

She said District 2 is the most thickly populated of Quezon City’s four districts.

Earlier, Mathay chided Daza for proposing to divide his constituency without consulting him. Jess Diaz
