Boardwalk project Ok’d

Filipinos and foreign tourists will soon have another reason to visit Luneta Park. This developed as Tourism Secretary Richard Gordon finally gave the go signal for the protracted construction of the controversial Luneta Boardwalk project.

Gordon said construction of the Boardwalk would resume soon with a private company providing the funds for the completion of the P400 million project.

"We are going to continue the project soon but it will be privatized," Gordon disclosed as he stressed the need for an additional attraction for both foreign and local tourists.

Upon assumption of his post, Gordon suspended the construction of the boardwalk pending investigation into the project initiated by the Philippine Tourism Authority (PTA), an attached agency of DOT.

Some sectors have also opposed the project, claiming that it would block the sunset in Manila Bay, one of the country’s major tourist attractions. – Mayen Jaymalin

PTA general manager Nixon Kua vouches for the viability of the project which he said would serve as a new venue to showcase Filipino culture and a wholesome destination for Filipino families.

But Gordon said the government and the private company undertaking the project will undertake little changes in the proposed Boardwalk.

Gordon, however, gave assurances that even if some remodeling is done, the Boardwalk would still be another reason for tourists to visit Luneta Park again. – Mayen Jaymalin
