A Filipino-Chinese president of a shooters association was shot dead as he was leaving a restaurant in Binondo, Manila yesterday afternoon.
Reports from the Binondo Police Station identified the victim as David Sy, 35, president of the Manila Downtown Shooting Range Shooters Association.
Sy later died while undergoing treatment at the Metropolitan Hospital in Tondo from three gunshot wounds in the body and the head.
One of the three gunmen was wounded after the victim returned fire with a caliber .45 pistol. The two other unidentified suspects fled aboard a motorcycle with plate number TP-102 towards Del Pan street.
According to police, the victim had just left a small restaurant at the corner of Sto. Cristo and San Fernando streets at about 2 p.m. when the suspects followed him.
Police said the suspects called the victim by his first name prompting him to look back. When he turned around, the suspects, armed with caliber .38 revolvers opened fire.
Though wounded, Sy managed to return fire, hitting one of the suspects, Decoroso Pamesa, 32, of Upper Bicutan, Taguig, in the right leg and body.
Recovered by police from the wounded suspect was a caliber .38 revolver. The suspect was rushed to the Metropolitan Hospital but was later taken to the Jose Reyes Memorial Hospital under tight police guard.
According to Superintendent Juanito de Guzman, commander of the Binondo Police Station, Pamesa claimed to be connected with the military.
He, however, refused to answer questions from police.
"We are discounting the angle that it was a robbery try as all his (victims) belongings and cash were untouched by the suspects. We are now looking at the possibility that a personal grudge was the motive," said De Guzman.
De Guzman said they are now being assisted in the investigation by elements of the National Burau of Investigation.
Meanwhile, a 17-year-old fugitive who killed a drinking buddy last September was arrested in Tondo, Manila early Tuesday morning.
Nabbed inside his house at 250 Area-B, Parola Compound, was Anthony Navarro. He was arrested by a team that included barangay tanod Alberto Bansi, brother of victim Almario Bansi, 42.
Navarro was brought to the Western Police District (WPD) Station 2 at 5:30 a.m., and was later turned over to the Western Police District-Homicide Section.
Investigation showed that Navarro stabbed Bansi dead while the victim was trying to pacify other drinking buddies who were having an argument last Sept. 25 along an alley at Area B of the Parola Compound.
