Drunken son shot dead by father in Quiapo

-
Blood is not always thicker than water.

This was the bitter lesson learned too late by a 34-year-old laborer who was shot dead by his own father after he went on a drunken rampage inside their house in Quiapo, Manila, early yesterday morning.

Police identified the fatality as Zaidy Yu, of resident of 844 Gonzalo Puyat St., Quiapo. Athony Yu, the father, is of the same address.

According to homicide investigator Senior Police Officer 2 David Tuason, the shooting happened at around 2:30 a.m. The victim had just arrived home from a night of drinking when he allegedly demanded P4,000 from his mother Erlinda.

The money, the victim claimed, will be used to pay his drinking bill. However, police said Erlinda only managed to give him P2,000, angering him.

It was at this point that the victim began to act wild inside their house and allegedly threatened to hurt his mother.

It was at this point that the victim’s father, Anthony Yu, intervened and tried to pacify his son.

But instead of calming down, the victim allegedly ran to a nearby shelf and grabbed his father’s caliber .45 pistol, triggering a scuffle.

Police said that it was during the scuffle that Anthony allegedly accidentally pulled the trigger, hitting the younger Yu once in the right lower armpit. He was rushed by bystanders to the Santo Tomas University Hospital but later died.

The victim’s father later surrendered to the police. He is now detained at the Western Police District under investigation. – Mike Frialde
