Taiwanese shot dead by robber

- Matthew Estabillo -
Police arrested one of two armed men who robbed and shot dead a Taiwanese businessman in Barangay Pag-asa, Quezon City Thursday night.

Victim Ming Chien Shien, 28, a resident of 45-D Road 13, Barangay Pag-asa, sustained a bullet wound in the back and was pronounced dead on arrival at the Sioson General Hospital. The victim was shot in front of his wife Janet who was unhurt.

The suspect, identified as Francisco Tekia, 34 of 32-B Cotabato Street, Bago Bantay, is now detained at the Central Police District headquarters awaiting proper charges.

Police are now hunting down his cohort, a certain "Jeremy," who escaped with Tekia after the shooting on board a motorcycle. The two were armed with handguns.

Shien is the third foreign businessman to be shot dead in four days. Filipino-Chinese traders Nelson Gabaldon and Ernesto Cheng-Vergara were ambushed by hired killers on Tuesday and Wednesday respectively.

Reports showed that the latest incident took place at about 7 p.m. along Road 1 in Bago Bantay. The victim and his wife had hired a tricycle driven by Tekia to take them to SM City. Jeremy was tailing them on his red motorcycle.

While on their way, Tekia intentionally stopped, as Jeremy pulled-over. Sensing trouble, Shien alighted from the tricycle to see what was going on. Without warning, Jeremy pulled out his firearm and shot Shien in the back.

The victim collapsed on the ground as Tekia proceeded to take Shien’s clutch bag containing at least P10,000 in cash, his cellphone, personal checks, and divested Janet of other valuables.

The assailants them fled on board the red motorcycle and sped towards the direction of Barangay Ramon Magsaysay. Janet rushed her husband to the hospital where he expired at about 8:08 p.m. – Matthew Estabillo
