Woman killed, 5 hurt by wayward truck

An unidentified woman was killed and five persons were injured after a cargo truck smashed into a passenger jeepney in Lagro, Quezon City, late Friday afternoon.

The sixth victim, who was riding a bike, was injured after he was pinned by the Fairview-bound jeepney when it fell on its side at the intersection of Regalado street and Mindanao Avenue at around 5:15 p.m. Friday.

Traffic investigators have yet to establish the identity of the fatality but she was described to be about 25 to 30 years old, fair complexioned and wearing a printed T-shirt and black maong short pants. She suffered broken ribs, bruises and contusions in the body and died while being taken to the Neapolitan Clinic in Lagro.

Authorities rushed the injured victims, who suffered fractured bones and contusions to the East Avenue Medical Center for treatment. They were Edgar Mahusay, jeepney driver, Joseph Macadan, 31, Mahusay’s helper; Ma. Christina Octobre, 74, chief librarian of the Asian School of Art and Sciences; Imelda Cervo, 22, waitress; and June Serrano, 31, truck driver.

The sixth victim Genario Vechina, 22, was also brought to the same hospital for bruises in the face and body after he was pinned by the PUV.

According to Serrano, he was cruising along Mindanao Avenue when he found that the truck’s brakes were not working.

"I could not stop the truck and suddenly hit the passenger jeepney that was then in the middle of the intersection, I tried my best to stop the truck but it was too late," Serrano told probers.

Due to the impact of the collision, traffic enforcer Marcial Santos said, the jeepney fell on its side. – Cecille Suerte Felipe
