Makati free from rabies

Makati City has been rabies free from 1998 to 2000 and the trend continues this year, Mayor Elenita Binay said yesterday.

Binay said the Anti-Rabies Vaccination Campaign continues to be enforced in the city’s 33 barangays and recently, a total of 4,099 dogs were vaccinated in Guadalupe Nuevo, West Rembo, and San Antonio from March 10 to April 10, 2001.

Binay attributed the zero-incidence of the dreaded mad dog disease in Makati to the joint efforts of the Makati Health Department (MHD), Department of Public Safety (DPS), and school officials to vaccinate all the dogs in the city and promote responsible pet ownership.

The combined group of the MHD and DPS vaccinated a total of 13,000 dogs in 1998, 7,000 in 1999, and 1,978 in 2000.
