A drunken amateur boxer was arrested in Mandaluyong City yesterday for mauling a 26-year-old man for no apparent reason.
Tito Enriquez, head of the Mayor’s Action Command (MAC), said they had to spray tear gas on the face of Elberto Caano to pacify and prevent him from inflicting further harm on the victim, Aldrin Sanchez, of 1760 Taft Avenue, Manila.
When he regained his senses at police headquarters, Caano, who belongs to the city’s stable of amateur boxers, asked for forgiveness from Sanchez and promised to shoulder his P2,000 medical expenses.
Sanchez was walking along Boni Avenue near the Jollibee Restaurant on Maysilo Street at around 2 a.m. when Caano spotted him. Without any justification, he threw several punches at the victim.
The victim could have been severely beaten if not for the timely arrival of Enriquez’s men, who sprayed tear gas on the assailant’s face to restrain him.
The gas temporarily blinded Caano who was immediately brought to the Mandaluyong police headquarters.
