10 linear parks along Pasig River eyed by DOT

Believe it or not, but the Pasig River may become the next hub for Metro Manila residents seeking relaxation and some fresh air.

This, with the planned development of 10 linear parks along the historical Pasig River which is now nearing extinction due to pollution caused by indiscriminate dumping of garbage from factories and squatters living near the area.

The Department of Tourism (DOT) reported that the government has already identified 10 areas for the development of 10 linear parks starting this year.

Tourism Secretary Richard Gordon said the 10 areas being eyed for tourism development include West Rembo, Makati Park, San Agustin Park, Quiapo Market, Muelle del Rio, Muelle del Banco Nacional, Fort Santiago, Sta. Ana Market, Mandaluyong Park and Barangay Pineda Park.

Gordon said the development of the Pasig River banks is part of the government’s efforts to regain back the lost beauty and bring back life to the legendary river.

He said the government has already approved a total of P160.8 million for the development of the parks totaling 41,578 square meter.

The proposed Makati park development consists of landscaping, civil drainage and electrical works for the 4,210 square meter basement along JP Rizal, directly across the Rockwell Center.

Landscape development will include introduction of pathways through the 200 meter length of the park. Benches, lampposts, tree grates, drainage, electrical utilities and trees will also be put up in the area.

The proposed West Rembo Linear Park, on the other hand, consists 760 square meters located west of the C-5 Bridge.
