Alcera announced yesterday the importation of four containerized vans, which would be used by the city’s waste management personnel to segregate recyclable and non-recyclable garbage collected from residents of Villamor base.
The vice mayor said the four 20-footer containers will be utilized initially in the Villamor area where the collected garbage will be segregated manually by the designated garbage collector.
He said recyclable plastics and bottles will be sold to junk shop owners while biodegradable materials, such as kitchen trash like fruit and vegetable peels, left over food and other wet garbage, will be sorted out for composting.
"A thorough segregation of garbage is needed because there are certain kinds of plastics and Styrofoam that can no longer be recycled," Alcera said in a discussion with the city council.
"Garbage segregation will start at the household level. Residents must adopt this plan for this project to succeed. All we need is just a little discipline" the 41-year-old vice mayor said.
Alcera explained that if the pilot project becomes a complete success, the Pasay City government will obtain more containerized vans, for other Pasay residents.
Pasay barangay officials announced that they have already made sure that the whole waste segregation process is kept sanitary and environmentally safe.
"There will be no seepage in the segregation containers or of any hazardous waste that may pose dangers to the health of Pasayeños. We have already anticipated whatever problem may arise and have resolved them in accordance with garbage disposal safety measures," Alcera added.
