Hacker takes P.2M from ATM machine
February 2, 2001 | 12:00am
Police arrested the other night a 40-year-old woman, believed to be a computer hacker, for allegedly overriding an Automatic Teller Machine in Caloocan City, and taking P200,000 in cash.
Marivic Galas of 188 Sabalo St., Caloocan, is detained at the city police detention cell awaiting proper charges.
Galas allegedly used her expertise in computers to crack codes of the ATM of the Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI) in Monumento, Caloocan, to withdraw money from the accounts of other bank clients.
According to reports, the suspect was arrested at about 10:20 p.m. after security guards noticed she was taking too much time inside the ATM booth.
Galas apparently has a P35,000 account in the bank and she used her ATM card to open the accounts of other clients. When she stepped out of the booth, she had in her possession at least P238,000 in cash.
Security guards got curious and asked the suspect to show them her account. They found out that Galas did not have enough money in the bank to withdraw that kind of amount. Matthew Estabillo
