6 out of 10 jail escapees fall

- Mike Frialde -
Six of the 10 inmates who bolted their cell at the Binondo police station early last Saturday morning have been re-arrested by elements of the Western Police District.

In a report to Manila City Mayor Lito Atienza, acting Binondo police station commander Chief Inspector Edgardo Wycoco identified those re-arrested as Raul Samarro, Dennis Corpin, Virgilio Ibarle, Jomer Rosaroso, Nazareno Carsena and Dan Logo.

Samarro and Corpin were nabbed at the Parola Compound in Tondo, Manila, just hours after their escape. Carsena was re-arrested also that same day on Escolta, Manila.

Last Sunday, police re-arrested Ibarle at Isla Puting Bato in Tondo while Rosaroso and Logo were nabbed yesterday.

Rosaroso was re-arrested in Novaliches, Quezon City while Logo was nabbed in his hideout in Paliparan, Dasmariñas, Cavite.

Still being hunted down by police are Tommy Mejia, Marvin Bondoc, Ernesto Cerito and Bartolome Rosaroso. All the escaped inmates are facing robbery and theft charges.

According to reports, the inmates escaped at about 1:30 a.m. last Saturday by bending the rusty steel bars of their cell. The duty jail guards were reportedly absent when the incident happened.

Because of the escape, WPD director Chief Superintendent Avelino Razon Jr. ordered the relief and investigation of four ranking officers of the Binondo police station. Ordered investigated and re-assigned to the headquarter’s Civil Disturbance Management Group (CDMG) were Superintendent Juanito de Guzman, chief of WPD-Station 11; Inspector Alfredo Opriasa, night-shift platoon commander; SPO4 Danilo Hermosura, night-shift duty investigator; and SPO4 Renato Romero, duty-desk officer.

Razon designated De Guzman’s deputy, Chief Inspector Edgardo Wycoco, as acting station commander.

According to reports reaching the WPD headquarters, news of the jailbreak was kept from media allegedly on De Guzman’s orders pending a manhunt for the escapees.
