Metro garbage gone in another 8 days

In 10 days or less, Metro Manila will be rid of the garbage on its streets. This was the assurance given by the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority after dumping operations at the San Mateo sanitary landfill started normalizing.

Greater Metro Manila Solid Waste Management Committee chairman Secretary Roberto Aventajado, in a radio interview yesterday morning, conveyed the assurance of MMDA chairman Jejomar Binay that the garbage backlog will be collected in 10 days, starting last Thursday.

Entry into the San Mateo landfill started to normalize last Wednesday night when police started escorting trucks moving up to the facility.

A minor incident occurred when the first trucks were leaving the landfill. Rocks were hurled at the trucks by two men. Both were arrested by the police, and thereafter, no other incidents were reported.

Around seven to 10 patrol cars of composite teams of the Philippine National Police were deployed to escort garbage trucks going to and from the San Mateo landfill. – Marvin Sy
