Mother, daughter hurt in Minglanilla landslide

CEBU, Philippines – A mother and her 14-year-old daughter were hurt after the land where their hut was situated suddenly collapsed and caused a landslide last Saturday dawn in Sitio Riverside, Barangay Calajoan, Minglanilla town.

Gaudiosa Flores and her daughter Cherylyn sustained minor injuries from the incident.

According to Police Officer 3 Vincent Aliñabo of the Minglanilla Police Station, Flores and her husband Sergio and their three children were sleeping inside the hut when they noticed that it was already leaning towards the riverside.

The family immediately ran towards a safe place but the mother and her daughter Cherylyn sustained injuries during their escape.

Flores and her family were immediately brought to the hospital.

Aliñabo said the area is situated near a river and may have softened due to the continuous rains brought by Typhoon Nona and tropical depression Onyok last week.

Due to the incident, Minglanilla Mayor Elanito Peña is contemplating on relocating the residents living close to the riverside.

Barangay Calajoan has been classified as "moderate to high" in terms of landslide susceptibility, according to the  geohazard assessment and mapping conducted back in 2013 and 2014 by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources. (FREEMAN)
