Cebu airport working on 3 ISO certificates

Christell Fatima M. Tudtud - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines – Officials of Mactan-Cebu International  Airport recently announced they are working on securing three certifications from the International Organization for Standardization this year, in time for MCIA Authority’s 25th charter anniversary.

MCIAA general manager Nigel Paul Villarete said they have started to comply with the accreditation process for the airport’s quality management systems, occupational health and safety management systems and environmental management system.

Villarete said this is part of their efforts to buoy the lone Cebu airport as one of the major travel hubs in the Asia-Pacific region.

“We are inspired to continue to serve as a hub of employment, enterprise and social endeavors, sustain our contributions to both local and national development through private and public service projects, and realize opportunities in diversification and ventures with major partners,” Villarete said.

He explained that the three ISO accreditations would mean improvement of systems and compliance with regulatory requirements of the airport.

He added this will help create the "best and safest" working environment possible for the airport staff and strengthen the airport’s commitment to environmental protection.

The MCIAA is a government owned and controlled corporation attached to the Department of Transportation and Communications.

It used to manage the airport operations for 25 years until the GMR-Megawide Cebu Airport Corp. took over in November last year.

Despite being only the second busiest in the country, MCIA is the first and only airport in the Philippines to be issued an Aerodrome Certificate by the Civil Aviation Authority.

Several major projects are set to be implemented at the airport in the coming years, including the construction of a multi-billion terminal for international flights which is eyed to be completed in 2018.

Studies are also currently done for the construction of a second runway that will cater to present and future service requirements.
