Human trafficking victims to get 'after-care' center
CEBU, Philippines – The former building of the Bureau of Immigration along P. Burgos Street in Barangay Centro, Mandaue City will soon be utilized as a center for survivors of human trafficking.
The center will strengthen the campaign against prostitution of women and children in the city.
Mayor Jonas Cortes approved for the creation of the "Reintegration Support Network Center" after the Local Council Against Trafficking (LCAT) sought the help of the mayor when they told him that victims of human trafficking also need "after care."
Cortes had actually initially chosen the center inside the Norkis Park but decided to build it in the former Bureau of Immigration because of its accessibility to the City Social Welfare and Services office.
The Mandaue City Council passed an Anti-Trafficking Ordinance in 2009 and revised it the following year, allocating a P1 million budget for its implementation.
Cases of trafficking in the city usually involve foreign nationals bringing minors to hotels and lodges for exploitation. Some were just friends of the victims who exploited them, according to sources.
Presently, over 20 to 30 survivors of trafficking were taken care of by the city which was endorsed by the Department of Social Welfare and Development Regional office (DSWD-7).
The victims went through several sessions like counseling and therapy sessions. Also, they were engaged in social activities and spiritual developments in order to rehabilitate their lives.
After-care programs of these survivors of human trafficking were also being supported by the International Justice Mission (IJM),Bidlisiw foundation, Share a Child Movement and Fellowship for Organizing Endeavors Inc.
