Marigondon causeway opened to the public

CEBU, Philippines - A rehabilitated causeway located in Barangay Marigondon was turned over by the Department of Public Works and Highways-Region 7 to the Lapu-Lapu City government on Wednesday.

Mayor Paz Radaza, in her press conference, said the newly renovated causeway was an addition to the existing docksides of the city to help tourists and residents in their travel to and from Olango Island and its adjacent islets.

There are existing three whaves in the city—at Sitio Angasil in Barangay Mactan, Barangay Punta Engaño and Barangay Maribago—mainly used by locals and tourists in their travel. “It (causeway) will bring economic benefits to the people there,“ Radaza said.

The DPWH had spent around P12 million to restructure the Marigondon causeway that was reportedly “left out” earlier.

The mayor said she and Lapu-Lapu lone district Representative Aileen Radaza requested the DPWH-7 to rehabilitate the causeway, the span of which was extended from 70 meters to 100 meters.

Mayor Radaza said Marigondon will be responsible in managing the causeway, with plans to impose charges for using it. As of now, the usage fee has yet to be determined, and a public hearing is needed for the purpose, she said. — Christell Fatima M. Tudtud/RAE (FREEMAN)
