Vendors in Tabunok divided on loan deal

Garry B. Lao - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines – Vendors at Tabunok Public Market are divided on the issue of entering a loan agreement for the construction of a new market costing P350 million.

In yesterday's consultative meeting at the Talisay People's Hall, at least 150 attendants were present.

While some of the vendors were in favor of the proposed loan with Land Bank of the Philippines, others were not otherwise amenable with it.

Sherwin Echavez, president of the vendors' association, said they do not want the city to loan for the construction but instead to ask for financial support from the national government for the project.

"There are many ways to make projects without entering into a loan," Echavez said.

The vendors also asked Mayor Johnny "JVR" De los Reyes of his feasibility study but the city mayor failed to show it to the public yesterday.

Mayor JVR told the vendors that they will again call for another gathering to let them see the feasibility study.

Vice Mayor Romeo Villarante promised that the project will not be constructed until every sector has been represented.

"Kada sector aduna gyu'y representante aron kung unsa'y concerns atong matubag sa wala pa masugdan ang proyekto," Villarante added.

The city government is eyeing the construction of a three-story market, similar to that in Naga City, Camarines Sur.

The first floor will be occupied by the vendors and there are also portions of the building to be occupied by fast food chains or any other interested locators.

"The market is not just for meat, fish, vegetable vendors but also for other establishments where the public could make one-stop shop," Villarante said.

City Councilor Valeriano Ylanan also pointed out that there is the need to make new and big market since Talisay's population continues to bulge.

"There is no reason to block the project," Ylanan said.
