Liloan beefs up law vs bird hunt
CEBU, Philippines - The barangay officials in Liloan have been tapped to strictly implement a municipal ordinance prohibiting the hunting, trapping and killing of birds and bats.
Education campaign was initiated by the municipal government officials, especially in the mountain barangays, to inform the residents and those coming from other municipalities about the town's law.
Under Liloan Municipal Ordinance 2012-07, a first offense violator will face the fine of P500, second offense P1,000 and third and succeeding offense P2,500 or imprisonment of not more than 10 days in case of insolvency.
According to the ordinance, global warning as a phenomenon has brought untold sufferings to man and the environment because he is forced to cope with natural disasters, various illnesses and diminishing supply of food, including water which is a major constituent of the human body.
The ordinance further said a significant player to the success of the greening effect are birds and bats that pollinate seeds to self-propagation or carry and drop them someplace to start a new life and thrive.
The Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Office has been tasked to implement the ordinance. (FREEMAN)
