Drunk driver’s speeding car hits, kills man

CEBU, Philippines- A 52-year-old man died in the hospital after he was hit by a speeding vehicle while walking along General Aviation Road in Barangay Buaya, Lapu-Lapu City Sunday morning.

Danilo Delgado, a resident of Portville Subdivision in Barangay Buaya, was rushed to Mactan Doctors' Hospital after he sustained severe injuries in the different parts of his body. He later died in the hospital.

Police report said the victim was hit by a Kia Sorento car (YHN-357) driven by Benjamin Akol, 24, of Barangay Cabancalan, Mandaue City.

Investigation revealed that Akol was travelling along General Aviation from Barangay Pajac, heading towards Carmelite School in Barangay Buaya, when suddenly he swerved right and hit a big stone beside the road before losing control of the steering wheel and hitting the victim walking beside the road.

The victim was then slammed towards the road's center.

Concerned citizens then called for an ambulance and later rushed the victim to the hospital.

The suspect was brought by the police to Lapu-Lapu City Hospital for liquor test after he was found to be smelling alcohol.

It was later found out he was positive of alcohol intake. The suspect also admitted he came from drinking session when the accident occurred.

The suspect is now detained at a holding cell of the Lapu-Lapu City Police Office pending the filing of a case of reckless imprudence resulting to homicide against him.
