City eyes measure set to benefit PWDs

Jose P. Sollano - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - The Lapu-Lapu City Council will soon require all public utility jeepneys, van for hire, multi-cabs and tricycles to post stickers announcing the transport privileges of the persons with disabilities.

Under the proposal, those that bear these stickers from Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board will no longer be required to secure PWD stickers in the city.

In today's regular session, they agreed to pass the ordinance on first reading. The ordinance's passing was in response to the request of the Federation of Persons with Disabilities.

The group advocated the move for posting of stickers inside the public utility vehicles. The intention of the group is to give preference PWDs whenever they board PUVs considering their stature in life.

They have claimed that there are circumstances when drivers deprive them of their right to be given fair and equal attention in the society.

The Magna Carta for Disabled Persons states that the disabled persons are part of the Philippine society, thus, they shall be given full support to the improvement of their total well-being and their integration into the mainstream society. — (FREEMAN)
