Compostela to launch 'bayanihan' system

CEBU, Philippines - The municipality of Compostela will formally launch today the bayanihan system as part of its strategy to generate funds to put up a public plaza.

Compostela Mayor Joel Quiño, Vice Mayor Josephine Abing and members of the Municipal Council will lead today's activity with barangay captains and municipal department heads and employees.

The ground breaking of the "Plaza de Compostela" will also be the highlight of the opening salvo of the different weekly activities of the town in connection with the incoming town fiesta on July 25 in honor of Saint James de Apostle.

Vice Mayor Josephine Abing said the site of the proposed plaza is owned by the Roman Catholic Church and the municipal government cannot allocate funds to develop the area.

Abing said they need the support from the private sector for the realization of this project between the church and the municipality.

The vice mayor hopes the realization of the proposed plaza through the bayanihan system.

To follow is the Barangayan Nite, a night of all barangays in Compostela town headed by Association of Barangay Councils President Joven Amor, the barangay captain of Barangay Cogon.

Earlier, the newly-formed Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Compostela, Cebu, Inc. announced its support to the administration of Mayor Quiño.

The businessmen's group in Compostela headed by businessman Pedro Delantar assured its support in the promotion of the town as good place for business and investments.

This year's fiesta celebration, the chamber is sponsoring an auto show on July 19 and also the nightly activities.

After the opening salvo today, the Compostela Got Talent Seasons 4 finals is slated on July 16, Religious Nite (Sayaw Para sa Plaza), July 17; Teachers Nite, July 18; Auto Show, July 19; Awards and Recognition/Talents Nite and Binibining Compostela, July 20; Mixed Martial Arts and Arnis Competition, July 21; Little Mister and Miss Compostela 2014, July 22; Binibining Compostela 2014 Pageant Nite, July 23; Grand Parade and San Miguel Beer Disco, July 24.

On the fiesta celebration on July 25, different activities are scheduled including the fluvial parade, laro sa dagat, Queseo Festival, street dance competition, Señorito y Señorita de Queseo Festival de Compostela competition and a drama on July 26.  (FREEMAN)
