Olango residents warned vs El Niño

Jose P. Sollano - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - Lapu-Lapu City Mayor Paz Radaza has warned residents in the different barangays, especially those in Olango Island and neighboring islets, to prepare for extreme heat because of the projected El Niño phenomenon.

Mayor Radaza also directed all barangay captains to help inform their residents and do other measures to conserve water and educate them for their safety.

Car wash firms operating in the different barangays in Lapu-Lapu City are also advised to minimize the use of water.

Most of the residents in the city use water provided by Metro Cebu Water District but for drinking, they use water from water refilling stations.

The City Agriculture's Office was also directed by Mayor Radaza to monitor the damage to be caused by El Niño to the islets barangays.

Aside from fishing, a number of residents in Olango Island and islet barangays are dependent on farming.

The city health department also advised the residents to be vigilant, especially on the possibility of suffering heat stroke.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration said the chance of El Niño happening is getting stronger based on local and international data.  (FREEMAN)
