Koreans backing promos in tourism

CEBU, Philippines - A group of Koreans in Cebu assured their support to the massive tourism campaign launched by the city government of Lapu-Lapu and the municipality of Cordova.

Bong Hwan "Charlie" Cho, president of the Cebu Korean Association, Inc., said they are fully supporting local government units who give attention to the promotions of tourism.

Cho, whose wife is the incumbent vice mayor of Cordova town, said a number of Koreans visited Cebu because of its beautiful places and good peace and order.

Cho said a number of Koreans are living in Lapu-Lapu City while others are partnering with Filipinos engaged in businesses.

In Cordova town, Koreans in partnership with the municipality, are operating a marine sanctuary in Gilutungan islet.

Cordova Mayor Adelino Sitoy said Koreans help the town in its tourism promotions.

In Lapu-Lapu City, Koreans assured city officials in their campaign to protect and preserve marine resources.

Last month, corals off the seawaters of Barangay Maribago were found vandalized by divers.

A Korean name was allegedly painted on the vandalized coral.

Meanwhile, after giving livelihood to fishermen in the different barangays of Cordova town affected by last year's oil spill, the municipal government of Cordova is also eyeing livelihood for women, as part of their campaign against cybersex

Last week, Mayor Adelino Sitoy assisted by his daughter Vice Mayor Therese Sitoy-Cho, distributed pumpboats, trisikads and fishing paraphernalia to fishermen in Barangay Pilipog.

The livelihood for women is being considered by the town officials of Cordova, citing the problems of cybersex.

A number of women have already been arrested by the police and other law enforcement agencies in coordination with non-governmental organization which launched a campaign against cyber sex.

A check made by The Freeman at the Lapu-Lapu City Jail manned by the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology disclosed that most of women arrested were involved in selling illegal drugs and linked in cybersex operations.

The lack of livelihood and lack of jobs are two of the reasons cited by them in doing illegal activities.

Cordova Vice Mayor Sitoy-Cho said the municipal government is trying its best to address the needs of the residents, especially the women.

Some non-governmental organizations also assured their support to the programs of the municipality of Cordova. (FREEMAN)
