Petty crimes blamed on absence of street lighting

Jose P. Sollano - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines -  The absence of street lighting of some areas in Barangay Pajo, in Lapu-Lapu City has been tagged as one of the reasons why incidents of snatching and robbery are rampant in the area.

Hoping to address this concern, Pajo Barangay Captain Junard "Ahong" Chan wrote a letter to Lapu-Lapu City engineer Alan Pedrigal and informed him of the need to replace and put up lights in some city streets, especially at the back of city hall near Barangay Pajo.

Chan told The Freeman that he was told a lot of snatching and robbery incidents happened in the place, although some of the victims failed to report them to the police.

Chan pointed out the lack of street lights in the area to have caused the petty crimes. He already informed the police of the problem.

According to Chan, he directed the barangay tanods to conduct routine patrol at the area to prevent crimes. However, he pointed out that the connection of lights in the city streets is under the jurisdiction of city government.

He said that they are focusing now more on the interior and barangay roads in Pajo.

Earlier, Mayor Paz Radaza vowed that the city government will be prioritizing the street lighting projects this year.

The city government has already allocated funds for the said purpose, the mayor said.  (FREEMAN)
