Mandaue Central School’s victorious comeback

CEBU, Philippines - After winning the much coveted crown of the “Sinulog sa Kabataan, Lalawigan” eleven years ago, the Mandaue City Central School contingent returned to the competition this time grabbing the second place.

“It is a victorious comeback, we thank the Sto. Niño for the win and the teamwork and dedication of everyone and the support of the city government,” said Aliena Quimgue, principal of the school.

After 2003, high school students represented the city in this annual cultural competition. But this time, it was decided that the elementary pupils will represent the city in last Saturday’s contest.The contingent is composed of 120 dancers, 150 props men and 70 staffers.

Quimque, some staff and the three lead dancers presented their winning trophy to Mayor Jonas Cortes.

Nino Matillano, coordinator of the city schools division for cultural affairs said one major factor for the win is the rigid screening of the dancers considering of the limited time for the practice.

Matillano also credited their win to the overall concept created by him and Twinkle Ignacio, a consultant.

The concept revolves around the resiliency of the Cebuanos amidst the calamities that hit the area featuring the collapse of the bell tower of the Basilica Minore del Sto. Niño.

Matillano added they also depicted the “Panagtagbo (encounter)” of the Holy Family which happens only in Mandaue.

“It’s our own way of offering to the Sto. Niño and we thank him for the strength in overcoming the problems,” said 13-year-old grade six student, Leizel Riveral, the queen of the contingent.

Riveral was chosen mainly because of her experience being a member of the school’s dance troupe.

Meanwhile, Quimque said they hope for the best during this Sunday’s Grand Sinulog competition.

Asked what they would do with the prize money of P150,000, she said they will use it to treat the members of the contingent to a dinner since their expenses exceeded the prize. — MNS (FREEMAN)
