JVR asks DPWH: Improve sewage in national highways

The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines -  Talisay City Mayor Johnny De los Reyes has asked the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH)-Cebu 2nd district engineering office to improve the sewage systems in some parts of the national highways.

With respect to the mayor’s request, Councilor Danilo Caballero yesterday authored a proposed resolution asking the agency to immediately repair the culverts at Cebu South Road - N. Bacalso South National Highway from Tabunok going to Mananga River.

The city council approved the proposal calling for a review of flood control systems.

“It is the responsibility of the Department of Public Works and Highways to ascertain that all government infrastructure projects, implementation plans, and designs are consistent with current standards and guidelines,” Caballero said.

Caballero said the Cebu South Road-N. Bacalso South National Highway in Tabunok going to Mananga River gets flooded when it rains.

Odorous water that comes from the fish section of the old  market in Tabunok also spills into Colis Street.

Caballero said residents and market goers complain about the smell emanating from it.

Caballero said stagnant water had accumulated due to non-stop rains during the last holiday season and clogged up manholes located near the market.

The water has remained stagnant for more than three weeks now.

“The district engineering office has the duties and responsibilities to monitor and review the results of the field surveys for highways, flood control and water resources development system, and other public work projects,” Caballero said.

Caballero, who chairs the committee of market and slaughterhouse operations in the city council, said the agency should have an enduring solution to the problem.

While the DPWH will still identify the problematic manhole, the city government will temporarily remove the stagnant water by using a submersible pump to suck it out.

Caballero said that aside from the rainwater, trash has reportedly accumulated in the manholes surrounding the public market. (FREEMAN)
