Cordova’s marine sanctuary boon to residents

Jose P. Sollano - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines -  The marine sanctuary in barangay Gilutungan in Cordova town is giving residents who fish for a living the opportunity to earn extra money.

“Daghan gayud kayo ang natabangan nga atong mga kaigsoonan diha karon sa isla sa Gilutungan gumikan kay aduna namay mga panginabuhian nga atong mahatagn ngadto kanila,” Sitoy said.

Cordova Mayor Adelino Sitoy said town officials are making efforts to make the sanctuary work as a tourist attraction.

Presently, the town is also earning from it.

Bong Hwan “Charlie” Cho, newly-elected president of the Cebu Korean Association, Inc. told The Freeman that the Gilutungan Marine Sanctuary is being operated and marketed by Korean investors and, in turn, give what is due the municipal government.

Cho married Vice Mayor Teche Sitoy, daughter of Mayor Adelino Sitoy,  in 2004.

When Sitoy assumed office as mayor in 2007, he appointed his daughter Teche Sitoy-Cho as tourism officer.

Both Bong Hwan “Charlie” Cho and his wife promote the town abroad to attract more investors.

Cho said several Koreans have assured him of putting up business in the town. (FREEMAN)
